Give them a call, make them a card or send them a gift - any token of your love will surely be appreciated. If you no longer have any grandparents, consider visiting or volunteering at a local nursing home. Grandparents Day History The movement for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife from West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Purpose for Grandparents Day: To honor grandparents To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children. To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. I would have loved to hear more about the "simpler" times - when they lived on the farm, how it was having 9 kids in one small house, etc. I've come across some fill-in gift books that ask questions about a grandparent's life. This would make a very special keepsake. If you haven't already done this - don't hesitate! Or you'll be like me and wish you had when it's too late.
